Study Domains: economy, European studies, political economy, political science, social sciences.
Programmes: studies leading to (a) Doctorate degree in history and civilization, economies, law, political and social sciences; (b) LLM in comparative, European and international law.
Open to: (a) university graduates from EU Member States and a limited number of nationals from other countries; meeting specific academic requirements and proficient in at least two official languages of the European Union; (b) academics, no age limit or restriction of nationality, with Ph.D. and research experience; presentation of research project must be accepted by the entrance board; good knowledge of English required (special test for EUI students comparable to TOEFL); selection on interview with presentation of research project.
Duration: (a) 2 years minimum; (b) 1 year minimum.
Fees: 10,330 per academic year for independent students.
Languages: instruction is mainly in English or French; good English is required in the Department of Economics and Political and Social Sciences.

Postdoctoral Fellowships:

  • Study Domains: European studies, human sciences, political science, social sciences.
  • Scholarships: (a) Scholarships granted by the various Member States of the European Community; (b) Jean Monnet Postdoctoral Fellowships; (c) Marie Curie Fellowships for studies in economics, history and civilization, law, political and social science.
  • Description: (a) for Ph.D: history and civilization, economics, law, political and social sciences; for LLM: international and European comparative law; (b) comparative research in history, economics, law, political and social sciences with a European perspective; (c) mobility grants for researchers to work in other countries either in Europe or internationally.
  • Open to: (a) university graduates from EU Member States and a limited number of nationals from other countries, up to 30 at admission (with grades above average); preference with an MA in the disciplines of the institute or other qualifications for Ph.D study, plus knowledge of 2 foreign languages; (b) academics, no age limit or restriction of nationality, with Ph.D and research experience; presentation of research project has to be accepted by the entrance board; (c) individual researchers of all ages with at least 4 years’ experience or with a Doctorate degree, a to participate in a research team in another country; also, in an effort to enhance networking between researchers, for researchers coming from third countries to train in Europe.

Alternative Development Training
Study Domains: development studies, alternative development training.
Description: training for development experts and development analyst/administrators in development alternatives: models and theories (economic, sociological, political science, cultural and ecological approaches); minimum 20 participants.

Advanced tutorial training in World Hunger Programme priority areas
Study Domains: nutrition.
Programmes: Advanced tutorial training in priority areas of the World Hunger Programme is defined by the United Nations University (UNU).
Open to: citizens of all countries who have completed technological or scientific graduate studies, preferably at the Ph.D. or M.Sc. level, in biological, social or economical areas.
Duration: maximum 12 months.
Financial assistance: individual scholarship programmes, covering a monthly stipend, plus tuition and round-trip air ticket to Guatemala are undergoing negotiation with UNU.
Languages: instruction in English and Spanish.

Postgraduate courses:

  • Study Domains: food, health and hygiene, nutrition, technology.
  • Programmes: (a) programme of studies in food and nutrition leading to postgraduate diplomas (Master’s); (b) postgraduate course (Master’s) in food and nutrition.
  • Description: (a) 4 fields of study: alimentary-nutritional process, planning, research and education (20 participants); (b) alimentary-nutritional process, planning, research and education. The objective is to enable professionals who may contribute to improving the food supply and nutritional situation of people to specialize in the fields of food and nutrition (18 participants maximum).
  • Open to: candidates able to take positive action on questions of food: agronomists, food technicians and engineers, nutritionists, nurses, biologists, educators, sociologists, economists, or any professional working in the social or economic sectors; candidates selected for the course must be able to provide documentary proof that they have financial support.
  • Duration: 20 month, divided into 2 cycles: basic cycle (3 periods of 4 months each) and the specialized cycle (2 periods of 4 months).
  • Fees: (a) US$24,000 for 20 months of studies: registration US$8,000, maintenance, US$12,000 (does not apply to participants residing in Guatemala and earning a salary); travelling costs from the country of origin (return air ticket depending on the candidate’s nationality: for Central America, the return air fare is about US$800); research fees and books, approx. US$3,000; medical and accident insurance, US$300 (for 20 months); (b) registration, US$110 in the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (annually) and US$20 in INCAP (only payment); tuition, US$400 per month; living costs, approx. US$650; insurance, US$15.
  • Financial assistance: candidates should seek support in the form of grants from international organizations in their own country, such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), embassies, foundations, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), and other sources.
  • Languages: (a) Teaching language: Spanish: (a) (b) Good knowledge of English required.
  • Applications: (a) 3 to 6 months before the course; new students are accepted every 2 years; enrolment for the selection course (distance education) and the academic test will take place in each country at the end of April; students for the next course will be selected in May; (b) in May.   • Study Domains: nutrition, short-term programmes.
  • Programmes: (a) practical training programme and short-term courses in nutrition and related sciences; (b) short-term courses in nutrition and related sciences.
  • Description: (a) aims to improve the student’s necessary skills for management and correct application of various methods and techniques on food and in the nutrition field or in laboratories, and develop ability to locate information sources on technical literature covering the subjects.
  • Open to: (a) professionals and technicians with a high degree of general basic knowledge and university background in these specific fields and/or good expertise in their speciality; candidates must be recommended by their ‘superior’; (b) nationals of any country, preferably Central American candidates, meeting the necessary requirements.
  • Duration: (a) from 1 to 12 months.
  • Fees: registration: (a) US$20; tuition: (a) and (b) US$500 per month; stipend: (a) and (b) approx. US$600 per month; health insurance: (a) and (b) US$15 per month; (b) research expenses: US$150.
