- Open to: candidates of Member and non-Member States of UNESCO that have a national MAB Committee, holding a first degree (10 annually); maximum age limit: 40.
- Place of study: in applicant’s country; endorsement of national MAB committee is an obligatory requirement.
- Duration: 1 or 2 years, depending upon the objectives of study (not renewable).
- Value: maximum US$5,000 (funds cannot be used for international travel).

Programmes: training courses and seminars. Description: (a) International or regional courses in the fields of education, natural and technological sciences, social sciences, cultural activities and communication, financed by UNESCO; (b) International courses and seminars sponsored by UNESCO, programmes of which are announced by the organizing institutions. Open to: restricted to nationals of UNESCO Member States and Associate Member States; participants must be at graduate level, have professional experience in the relevant field of study and be officially nominated by their governments. Held: in UNESCO Member States, in co-operation with national bodies and specialized institutions of those countries and with other international organizations. Financial assistance: a limited number of scholarships awarded, covering a monthly allowance, tuition or registration fees, books and travel expenses. Applications: candidates are officially nominated by their governments; no individual applications for participation can be considered by the UNESCO Secretariat. UNESCO will however supply information on request. 1. Individual Fellowships (technical cooperation): - Study Domains: cultural studies, education, information science, natural sciences, social sciences, technology.
- Scholarships: individual fellowships awarded within the framework of operational projects financed by extrabudgetary sources.
- Open to: nationals of UNESCO Member States and Associate Members of those countries where economic and social development projects are being carried out; the purpose of these awards is to help national project personnel develop and gain skills and knowledge that will best equip them to achieve the objectives of a project as well as their assigned duties.
- Place of study: in UNESCO’s Member States as well as in the United Kingdom, the United States of America and in Singapore.
- Duration: variable, depending on whether the studies should be directed towards obtaining a diploma, degree or qualification, or have mainly a practical or applied orientation.
- Value: individual fellowships: monthly allowance usually at ad hoc rates, plus travel, tuition, termination and book allowances.
- Applications: through the national authorities specially designated by UNESCO Member States; direct applications by individuals and private bodies cannot be considered by the UNESCO Secretariat.
2. Individual Fellowships Programme: - Study Domains: communication, cultural studies, development studies, education, human sciences, sciences, social sciences, technology.
- Scholarships: individual fellowships granted under the Organization’s regular budget.
- Description: for studies in designated priority areas: Basic Education for All; Water resources and their associated ecosystems; Ethics of Science; Protection of cultural Diversity and the encouragement of pluralism and dialogue between cultures; and Promoting equitable access to information and knowledge, especially in the public domain.
- Open to: nationals of UNESCO Member States and Associate Members; the purpose of these fellowships is to provide opportunities to further primarily higher education or research generally abroad and to acquire international experience in fields of study for which appropriate facilities are not available in the country of origin; in addition, under UNESCO’s Fellowship Programme, each Member State is entitled to submit up to 2 requests, listed in order of priority, for deserving candidates.
- Place of study: in UNESCO Member States and in Singapore.
- Duration: not exceeding 9 months, (6 months maximum under the UNESCO Fellowships Programme).
- Value: monthly allowance based on United Nations stipend scale (or ad hoc rates in the case of UNESCO Fellowship Programme), plus travel, tuition, termination and book allowances (on a case-by-case basis).
- Applications: through the national authorities specially designated by UNESCO Member States (usually National Commission for UNESCO or appropriate ministry); direct applications by individuals and private bodies cannot be considered by the UNESCO Secretariat.
3. Study Grants: - Study Domains: cultural studies, education, information science, natural sciences, social sciences, study visits, technology.
- Scholarships: study grants.
- Open to: nationals of Member States of UNESCO who occupy positions of high professional responsibility in their countries; candidates will propose their own programme of visits to UNESCO for approval, and will be required to present a report on their return; all candidates must be nominated by their governments.
- Place of study: in several countries or in several places within one country, on observation or consultation visits.
- Duration: maximum 2 months.
- Value: covers economy travel expenses and daily allowance based on United Nations subsistence rate or ad hoc rates.
- Applications: must be presented by the competent national authorities designated by the governments of UNESCO Member States (in general the National Commission for UNESCO or the competent ministry in the field of study chosen); no consideration can be given to applications submitted by individuals or private bodies.

- Scholarships: (a) Joint Japan/ World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP); (b) Cooperation Programmes; (c) Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Program.
- Description: (a) postgraduate studies (b) partnership programmes with universities around the world to enable scholars to receive specialized training in key areas of development, such as economic policy management or infrastructure management; all programmes lead to a Master’s degree; (c) course of studies leading to a Master’s degree in public policy.
- Open to: nationals of World Bank borrowing countries; (a) candidates must be accepted to graduate studies in a university located in any World Bank member country except the applicant’s country and be under 45 or preferably under 35 years of age; (see website for further criteria; (b); promising candidates from the public sector in developing countries, such as central banks and ministries of finance and planning; (c) mid-career professionals from all World Bank borrowing member countries, including former socialist countries, are eligible to apply to the M.P.P. programme as McNamara Fellows, so long as they meet the M.P.O. programme’s normal eligibility requirements.
